A Little History
Swan Point is an unincorporated community in southern Charles County, Maryland, United States. The Swan Point Yacht and Country Club was originally planned and initiated in the 1980s around an 18-hole waterfront championship golf course; Since then there has been added: a community waterfront pool, a marina, clubhouse, trails, and tennis courts. Custom homes of various types styles and prices populate the wooded 1/3 to 1/2 acre lots. Some have a water view, water frontage, or golf course frontage. There are plans for additional homesites in 2012, which will contain cluster homes, townhouses as well as more single-family homes. Swan Point Yacht & Country is located on the banks of the Potomac River. Issue, MD is also considered part of Swan Point, MD since the 20645 zip code was made to include both names in 2009. Legend has it that Swan Point received its name from Captain John Smith when he explored the region in the early 17th century and saw thousands of wintering Swans in the water off that point of land. Charles County, Maryland is also home to an early settler of Maryland, Edward Swann. . Current historical findings likely associate the naming of Swan’s point to Edward Swann who was granted 1200 acres of land mostly in Charles Co, MD, by Lord Baltimore. Swan Point Country Club is home to The Point Grill is open year-round, serves lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday.
The Midway Grill is open only during golf season, serving cold sandwiches, hot dogs and snacks.
Snack carts also travel the fairways during the day serving cold beverages & snacks.
Swan Point Yacht & Country Club started as a quaint, nine-hole Southern Maryland golf course along the banks of the Potomac River. Then, in the late 80’s Bob Cupp, world-renowned golf course designer and consultant to the Augusta National Golf was hired to expand and redesign Swan Point to an 18 hole championship test of golf. The result is one of a very special and unique golfing challenge. For golfers who know the Middle Atlantic coast well, one image keeps coming to mind when they play here: They could swear they are in the Carolinas when they are on our course. Possibly it’s because, on 12 holes, either water or marsh can come into play. Perhaps it’s because players share the fairways with deer, herons, osprey, and bald eagles. The Swan Point Marina is available with a membership. Members enjoy amenities such as power, water, boat storage, lighting, electric security, and parking facilities.
Pull up to the Swan Point Yacht & Country Club by boat at the community marina on Cuckold Creek near the 16th hole. There’s no fee to dock your boat while playing golf. If you call ahead, our staff will meet you with a cart and take you to the Clubhouse and the first tee.
